3 yo medium-high energy black lab mix, well trained but reactive w/ bite history

Original profile (before I met him)

Bandit - Available for Adoption

Personality: Bandit is a loving and calm companion at home, thriving in a peaceful setting with a playful spark! He enjoys lounging on the couch but lights up for fetch with a stuffed animal or a quick play session, especially when visitors arrive or routines change. This once-challenging pup has grown into a mostly well-mannered dog, forming a strong bond with his foster. He’s non-destructive around the house, house-trained with very minimal incidents, and almost never barks, making him a quiet and respectful indoor companion.

Training: Bandit completed an 8-month training program, mastering commands like sit, stay, heel, and more. He’s rusty but picks up cues fast with practice. A slip collar (trainer-recommended) manages his reactivity, and his foster can demonstrate calming techniques to handle outbursts and avoid bites.

Special Needs: Bandit is reactive, with occasional outbursts triggered by certain dogs, kids, or sudden movements (e.g., scooters, skateboards). Though not strong for his size, his sudden lunges can be intense, requiring a confident handler who can keep him on a short leash and manage abrupt pulls. No other dogs in the home is strongly preferred due to a past bite incident during a previous adoption. Avoid walking with other dogs initially. Muzzle-trained for vet visits or triggers. Not suited for homes with young children due to past reactivity.

Health: Good overall—treated chipped tooth, healthy teeth/breath. Loves water, handles heat and stairs well, and stays calm during thunderstorms and fireworks.

Background: Found as a presumed abandoned pet in the Everglades in 2023, Bandit entered a sanctuary, completed an 8-month training program, and was adopted but returned after a bite incident and injuring a child. In foster care since September 2024, he’s shown significant improvement with two trainers, though some reactivity may persist.
